Adoring the jewelry from Fortune Favors The Brave...especially that gorgeous gold and turquoise necklace. Perfectly bohemian for summer. And year round really. I want to pile it on all at once. Hot. |

Some quick tips:
1. Enjoy this as a mousse, or use it as a cake filling.
2. Spice it up with cinnamon, cayenne pepper, crushed lavender, or a tablespoon of liquor (just subtract the amount of liquor from water if you do that option), or steep your boiled water with tea.
3. DO NOT over-whisk....watch the consistency and stop the second it thickens. If you whisk it too much, the mousse will be grainy.
4. Measurements are super critical and need to be spot on for this to work - use a kitchen scale if you have one!

I spent the afternoon scouring the spring collections to check out what beauty trends are hot for spring/summer, and I am loving what came down the runways. Gianfranco Ferre went into bombshell mode with tawny skin and smoky eyes. Bright lips were spotted at Fendi, Gucci, Jil Sander and Diane von Furstenberg. Preen went etheral and soft with a dusting of minty eyeshadow and a darker nude lip. Anna Sui and Alexander Wang kept faces fresh and clean. I personally LOVE the bold lip in a hot pink or flashy tangerine for spring, and of course the ol' trusty smoky eye. Each of the items below are under $15, so you can go on a spree and try each look guilt-free!

While I generally like furniture to be neutral, I am a lover of all things colorful when it comes to textiles (think bold pillows, bright rugs, patterned curtains, etc). Right now we have this black and white striped "Rand" Ikea rug in our living room, and these rugs from Decorative Carpets are so much fun. A splash of any one of these lively patterns from the Mar a Mar collection will surely wake up any interior.

While we are still getting peppered with snow flurries here in Boston, proof that spring is nearly here is right outside my window. Flowers are starting to shoot up, the gray is slowly but surely dissipating, and the bitter cold is fading fast. With spring's cool weather and sporadic showers comes the inevitable rainbow. Inspired by the cheerfulness that this colorful arch in the sky brings, I put together a fun board full of variegated essentials for spring worth their weight in gold.

Erin never ceases to amaze me....every photo she poses for I am instantly smitten with. The styling, the tats, the hair, the attitude...everything in this Zadig & Voltaire campaign is so spot on. That's not even mentioning the fab clothes this European shop stocks. Love it.
Now to the question that begs to be answered: would I get a tattoo? Perhaps. Haven't found that one thing that I want permanently etched into my body though. If I did, it would be something like a feather or geometric pattern. Where? On my foot, behind my ear, or on the back of my neck. It'd be like a little surprise each time I put my hair up in a little top knot. Do any of you have tats?
Happy Saturday, peeps!

Glasses - I have been rocking them since 1999, and have yet to find the perfect pair. Having gone through 4 pairs since my eyesight began to wither away to near blindness, my current specs are less than spectacular. I always take them off when taking photos, and look like a real champ with those annoying red dots on the side of my nose. Don't even get me started about the dork factor my crooked glasses give me because of my uneven ears. Enter Tortoise & Blonde - a modern alternative to classic eyewear designed for functional versatility and grounded in craftsmanship and details.
I not only want to rock the frames in this line, I NEED to rock the frames in this line....they are the epitome of cool. Launching today at SXSW, any of you lucky readers that are there in Austin should stop by their booth and give the makers of Tortoise & Blonde a hug for me.
As a gal who wears her glasses the majority of the time, I am seriously wanting to wear every single frame that I have seen in the collection around the clock.... which fits in perfectly with the brands motto of "one today, another tomorrow." Wear them all? Don't mind if I do! Plus, Tortoise & Blonde eyewear is affordable....around $100 to $150 a pop, the founders of Tortoise & Blonde are officially my new fave people. I am now proud to be a four eye.

With my upcoming trip to California on the horizon and after the great response to my first post about how to pack light for trips ranging from a few days to a few weeks, I decided to do a follow-up to solve that pesky "no liquids" and "3 oz and under" rule. You know how there is always some guy getting pissed off about TSA tossing his pomade, or some lady freaking out about her expensive perfume getting red lighted? Here are some tips and tricks to meet those requirements to keep your precious products from getting trashed and to keep you from being "that person."
1. Transfer products into appropriate-sized containers.
You can either go to a shop and buy some travel containers, or you can do as I do...reuse the empties that you swiped from previous hotel stays. Just peel the original labels off, and you have yourself the perfect vessel at no additional cost. When filling up the empties for your trip, put a piece of scotch tape around the container and use a permanent marker to scribble what it is on your removable tape "label."
2. Swap out for solids.
Keep in mind that all your liquids have to fit into a quart-size plastic baggie, so some products that you typically use liquid versions of can be swapped for solids. Some facial cleansers come in bar form, and you can use a solid perfume to scent yourself while traveling.
3. Shop the travel aisles, and keep a plastic bin under the sink with all the toiletries you will need.
Head on over to your local drugstore or Target, and shop the travel section. One amazing site that specializes in TSA-approved portions is 3floz.com...it is a wonderful collection of portable beauty products from the best brands around the globe. I keep a plastic bin underneath the sink stocked with all my travel items for quick and easy packing....extra contact cases, travel-size saline solution, mini toothpastes, mini shampoos/conditioners/hairsprays, empty bottles to transfer face stuff into, etc.
4. Go to beauty stores and stock up on samples.
This is one way that you can try out new products and meet those pesky requirements. Load up on freebies like perfumes (the skinny tubes take up no space at all and last surprisingly long!), concealers, face creams, and more. Most shops either have pre-made samples to give you or a sales associate will make one for you if you ask.
Happy travels!

Just had to share this recipe because it blew my mind.....I had NO IDEA how easy it was to make your very own vanilla extract! Granted it isn't a last minute type of thing and takes quite a bit of time to 'mature,' but having an endless supply of this vanilla extract (aka liquid gold in this household) is too tempting. A bottle of this plus a batch of homemade honey lavender cookies, and I'm am good to go.
How to Make Vanilla Extract
{from Simply Recipes}
3 vanilla beans
1 cup vodka
glass jar with tight fitting lid
1. Use kitchen scissors or a sharp paring knife to cut lengthwise down each vanilla bean, splitting them in half, leaving an inch at the end connected.
2. Put vanilla beans in a glass jar or bottle with a tight fitting lid (mason jars work well). Cover completely with the vodka.
3. Give the bottle a good shake every once in a while. Store in a dark, cool place for 2 months or longer.
Kitchen Notes:
Commercial vanilla extract usually has simple syrup (sugar water) added to the extract to give it a sweet aftertaste. You can do this if you want, but if you are using the vanilla for baking, there really is no need.
Lasts for years. You can keep topping it off with vodka once in a while as you use it, just remember to give it a good shake.
You can also make vanilla sugar by putting a split vanilla bean into a jar of white, granulated sugar. Great way to infuse the sugar with vanilla flavor for baking.

Designed and crafted by Jennifer Sarkilahti in her Brooklyn studio, "Odette New York is a jewelry line inspired by organic and industrial shapes, natural specimens, antique artifacts, and travel mementos; made using ancient and modern wax carving techniques and hand fabrication. Each original design begins from a pencil sketch that is carefully translated by hand into wax like a tiny sculpture before being cast into metal. Classic with a slightly bohemian touch, the handmade nature of Odette displays an organic aesthetic that is signature to the collection."
Each of her pieces are absolutely gorgeous, and this and this are officially on my lust list.

Since moving to Boston, grocery shopping has become the bane of my existence. In between ripping my shoulders out of their sockets and shattering my wrists into a million pieces while lugging our food back home on that hellish march back to the South End from Shaw's, and then getting home and realizing I forgot something, I just can't muster up the strength to keep our fridge and pantry fully stocked. We always have the essentials on hand, but those seem to be devoured sooner than later. I made myself this grocery list - had to make it bright so I would make sure to remember it before I head out the door - and figured I would share it. Download the pdf here, print 'em up, scribble over them, and get 'er done.

The hubby and I went to the MFA yesterday for an impromptu date, and had a great time. In the 'Arts of the Americas' gallery, there were 2 chests and hand-printed art from German immigrants that settled in Pennsylvania that really caught my eye. In celebration of this inspiring expression of culture, history, and style, here is a round up of Etsy artisans with a flair for folk art.

This look just screams "Go big or go home"...which I actually wouldn't mind doing if my home looked like that. Benjamin Moore's hot pink "Razzle Dazzle" paint was used to give the statement entry's walls their signature hue, and I give huge props to the designer (Jonathan Berger) and the owner for making that commitment - and pulling it off! The room just feels so luxe, ladylike and rich without being traditional, so I used that as a starting point for the outfit...well-made separates with personality and flair. While I wouldn't have the guts to surround myself with that color on 4 walls, I would definitely use it to paint a chair, frame, or even jazz up a thrift store lamp. Perhaps I will muster up the courage to don a pair of neon shorts come summertime. ;)
